Waverley Preparatory School and Day Nursery

Year 4 at Waverley - For Ages 8-9 Yrs

Year 4 Overview

In Year 4 pupils are expected to have a gradually more mature attitude to school life as they become part of one of the older year groups in the school. They are encouraged to not only take more responsibility for planning both their school work, homework and school day activities but also have a caring and protective attitude to the younger pupils in the school.

As well as a formal structured timetable with daily lessons of Maths and English, children will receive daily homework to be completed for the next day. Other core curriculum subjects include French, Design and Technology (DT), Art, History, Geography, Science, Thinking Skills, Problem Solving and RE. In Year 4, the majority of children will be finishing or will have already finished in-school reading schemes and will be free readers. At this stage in their reading, children will be expected to choose and read books from the library. Reading is monitored closely through reading diaries which are used by both parents and teachers to log and annotate progress. Throughout a pupil's life at Waverley, parents are strongly encouraged to listen to their children reading aloud every day and this practice is still strongly recommended in year 4. Children are also encouraged to broaden their interests and develop their reading skills outside of the standard reading programme through daily reading practice of books that take their interest and capture their imagination. The school also provides a recommended reading list to parents of books suitable by year group and reading ability.

Inter-School Fixtures and Competitions

Pupils in Year 4 take part in sports fixtures against other local schools for football, cricket, rounders, hockey, netball, athletics and swimming galas.

Within school, all Year 4 students participate in World Book Day, Modern Foreign Languages Day, Environment Day, Maths Day Challenges, KS2 Christmas and Summer Productions, and also a Year 4 Assembly.
